Work

I thought I was going to use the monsterkai domain for my portfolio website, but think it'll be better to get another domain.

Anyway, here are some sketches! Some are from the site Pixellovely and a few are some statues I drew at the Met. Thinking of going there again if I have the time.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Typing this before I leave the city. Not sure how this year's holiday will be, but one thing for sure is that I'm returning to the city first thing Friday to get back to work. I plan to finish the backgrounds this weekend. The lab is closed so I'll have to do everything at home. The animation is coming out alright and will be finished before Dec 14th. Most of the temp track will have to stay for now, but I'll definitely have a final soundtrack before next year's showcase.

I also got this sweet background from animator Stephen Neary.

It's from his new animation Dr Breakfast. It's about a man's soul that bursts out of his eye and eats a bunch of stuff. While he's doing that, two deer take care of his catatonic body.

The story is pretty weird and funny. The talking deer are great and I like the backgrounds, but the best of all is the music. I don't know why, but I like the style and the sounds used. Though I'm no expert sound mixer, I always find the soundtrack to be more important than the animation itself and wish I had more time to focus on it with my own projects.

For example, the short animation Bird Boy is up for nomination for best-animated short in the Oscars. I'm hoping it will make it to the top and screened at theaters. I can't find much, but I love the music I'm hearing in the trailer and preview, that twangy guitar sound.

It's cold outside.

The animation for my Intermediate project is going along well. I have scenes one and two scanned in. Once the rest are transferred to the computer, the clean-ups can begin. I'll also have to complete backgrounds too. Here are two ruff pencil tests:

I've also done some drawings, though I really hate my scanner at home and prefer the camera for a quick shot. The zombie was drawn at the studio.

This last one was drawn for Demonic-Apricot. It's one of her characters for a webcomic she is working on.

Animatic Almost Completed

I've begun eating a lot of Halal food lately. The lamb and chicken over rice is so good.

The animatic for Kung Pao Chicken is almost done. The drawings are complete and some of them have already been timed out in After Effects. I still need to apply the temp track for music and voices. Once all that is done, I can begin the animation.

For now, here are some storyboards I've done for class:

I'm Losing Sleep.

Here are some character sheets. Man, am I losing way too much sleep.

Anyway. I'm almost done with the images for the animatic, but I still need to put them together. I do need a better tablet. There's no way I can keep working at home with a graphire4. It has served me long enough.

Week 4

It's week four and my animatic is due next Monday. Then it's just animating until the due date.

Also, here's a pencil test I've done.

It came out alright. It's just the main poses now they need to be fleshed out more. I can definitely draw a better final pose. Stay tuned! More drawings on the way!

D-Pad Studio's released a demo for their new game Owlboy a few weeks ago. Definitely check it out.

The Best Poster of All Time!

Moved into my new dorm Saturday. Classes started today and so far they've been a blast. The only downside is that it was raining all day. I got soaked and bag holding my groceries ripped...Mhwa mhwa mhwaaaaa...

Lastly, before I left Arizona last week, my dad found a movie poster for Akira at the thrift store. I freakin' love that movie. It's still in pretty good condition. Now it just needs to be framed when I get back home.

Jerry and Sketches #001

Here's a sketch of Jerry Garcia I drew from an old magazine.

I've been watching Bill Plympton post his sketches for his new film. I feel like doing the same. Unfortunately my scanner is busted, so I'm relying on my camera. I still have to figure out a title. It'll come to me eventually. Also, school will be starting soon. I'll be heading back to New York on Thursday and moving in on Friday. Can't wait!

I've also been brainstorming for a new Flash animation. I've wanted to start some sort of series. I was working on one a long time ago called Fool's Life, but it was not funny at all and the animation was terrible. I was also working on an animation for a tournament called Rise, but I couldn't finish it in time due to my lack of commitment plus a terrible hard drive failure. More punishment for my procrastination. I had a jump drive with a crappy "trailer" I made for the movie when I was working on it. At least it allowed me to save some of the work to show:

The thing about these contests is that most of the characters you drew were created by other people. These two characters belong to Mr-Tea-And-Crumpets. You create a character and had to work them into the story somehow. You compete with other people seeing who can create the better story overall. I didn't get the animation done, made a comic instead, and didn't make it into the roster. However, the animation I made was close to the type of thing I want to work on now. I liked the design, but I haven't tried doing something like it again...

TOFA 2011

Albinoblacksheep's TOFA 2011 is over for me, but I'll definitely participate next year. Round 2 consisted of animating the worst date ever with which we had to include a frozen mongoose somewhere in the video. The round was broken into four brackets. I was in the second one. Check out the videos on TOFA's website and on Albinoblacksheep. Also check out Round 3's Animated Introduction created by the awesome Andrew Kepple. A bunch of our characters get slaughtered! XD

Now there's only two more rounds left. Good luck to the winners! Thanks to Eyesadrift, John LaPiana, and AvidLebon for doing the characters' voices in my video. If you need a voice actor for your video, give them a call!

My current project is a Flash adventure game. I wanted to delve more into programming with Actionscript.
